The Rosicrucian Cosmo-Conception

Written by an inspired Max Heindel at the turn of the previous century, this book is almost required reading for the true Seeker. Affectionately known as The Cosmo, it provides information essential to understanding all realms of the physical world, from the gross to the subtle.

Although the ultimate goal is to leave this nature-order, it is always helpful to expand one's knowledge of certain aspects of it. That said, the links below are provided without obligation. You, yourself will be the judge of what is presented. You will decide what to do with the information provided.

In general, The Cosmo endeavors to answer the following questions:

Whence have we come?

Why are we here?

Whither are we going?

If the book is approached with a clear and open mind, you are guaranteed to derive significant and lasting value from it. Keep in mind that the book was written in the early 1900's, so there are items that are presented in a veiled state, primarily because the average human-being of that time was not at a level of development that would allow him or her to be confronted with certain truths in their raw form. Still there is much here that is informative and helpful. Many of the diagrams used in this blog ("The Seven Worlds", "Average Life-Cycle of a Human Being", "777", etc.) are taken from the Cosmo.

In closing, the cosmology chronicled by the Cosmo was not invented by Max Heindel, nor does it "belong" to any one group. It is as old as humanity. Heindel was chosen to disseminate it to the Western world in his era, just as others were chosen to spread the word in the epochs preceding him and in the century that succeeded him. The Knowledge is constant, only the messengers change.

Two links are available, a hyper-link and a .pdf link. Both contain the full Cosmo.

I have started reading the Rosicrucian Cosmo-Conception and wonder if I can have your thoughts about Diagram 5 which shows the Tenfold Constitution Man. Why is the spirit shown? I thought we are no longer are connected - spirit, soul and body. Or is he talking about Man before the fall? A E Powell talks about the causal body but Heindal does not mention it, why? And lastly what exactly does the LR mean by the saying, 'There is no empty space'. Thank you.

andrew,

i hesitated for years to post the Cosmo because there are some areas of Heindel's work that will raise questions, especially when compared to van Rijckenborgh.

Heindel's work concerns itself with the Seven Worlds of this nature-order. That includes the physical world and the reflection-sphere. Never in his public writings does he present or elaborate upon the fact that there are two separate nature-orders, one divine and the other un-divine.

It must be understood that his use of the word "spirit" is not meant to represent the divine Spirit, born of God, to which we are trying to re-link. It is a terminology used within the context of the nature-born "higher self", which is a reflection-sphere entity.

As for the causal body, when he states "We ourselves, as Egos, function directly in the subtle substance of the Region of Abstract Thought", he is referring to the causal body. In an effort to Westernize these teachings and to distance them from the Theosophical teachings of the day, he revised some terminology.

Van Rijckenborgh and his brother were affiliated with Heindel for some years until a separation took place. i don't have details on what caused the break, but in comparing the philosophies, it is clear to see that there are marked and distinct differences between Heindel and JVR.

Heindel was trying to coax the man of the early 1900s into seeing that he was a threefold entity who was evolving via his experiences on earth. Van Rijckenborgh felt there was more to it than that and went on a search to find out what it was. His writings are the result.

That said, the Cosmo does have a certain amount of value, but only as it pertains to the twin-spheres of the physical world (material-sphere and reflection-sphere). Taken by itself, it will not lead anyone to Liberation, nor will it reveal mankind's true state-of-being.

As always, discernment should be the order of the day when reading the Cosmo, or any other esoteric work, for that matter.

re: "there is no empty space"

This axiom has existed for ages. The classical Rosicrucians of the 17th century referred to this often.

Reach your hand out in front of you. More than likely, you will have reached into what we call "empty space". You haven't. There is a substance there. There is life, activity; you just can't see or feel it. The All, which is all there is, created everything from the All. Emptiness implies a void. Nothing in the All can be void for that would indicate that The All is not All.

The different densities or dimensions are usually represented as layers stacked one upon the other. In actuality, all dimensions interpentrate and permeate one another. We sense only the density that we inhabit. The other dimensions are present in the same space as we, but due to an inability to sense them, we perceive only "empty space".

When we develop the proper sense organs, we will be able to experience other states-of-being. The Rosicrucians remind seekers of this fact in order to help them understand the existence of archons, aeons, light-spirits, earth-bound spirits, Christ radiations, separate nature-orders, etc. Just because we cannot see these things does not mean that they do not exist. They do.

Every microscopic portion of the infinite Creation is substantial and alive. There is no "empty space".

Diagram 8 shows that the highest we can achieve in this nature we live in is the "world of divine spirit". It is the 7th, highest level of the fallen nature order. It was the highest leven in the Saturn period, and will the highest in the last, Vulcan period.

Above this region is the "world of virgin spirits", J. van Rijckenborgh explains in the book "Elemntary Philosophy of the Modern Rosycross" that those called "Virgin Spirits" by some esotericists are in reality the original humanity... that did not fall (or returned to the 6th cosmic region. The lowest level of the 6th cosmic region lies "one step" above the "world of life spirit" depicted in the diagram 8 os the Cosmo).

As far as I know, our current personality inhabits the "Region of Concrete Tought" as its highest level, while we, earth humanity, begin to touch the "Region of the Abstract World" as our mental bodies develop. It seems that developing asbstract tought is the next "evolutionary" step for us, inside the fallen nature order.

Viewing the diagrams of the Cosmo my attention was caught also by the diagram 10 that shows that Anthropoids (the so called "great apes") are members of OUR life wave, altough they are the so-called "stragglers" between us.

I was watching videos about apes on youtube the other day and paying attention you can fell a hint of something very morbid and sorrowfull when you look to those apes (Chimps, Gorillas, Orangutans and Bonobos to the specific). It seems they are in need of much love, as are all we fallen creatures - from the mineral kingdom to us, earthly men. ( and beyond).

Sorry, I meant: "The lowest level of the 6th cosmic region lies "one step" above the "world of divine spirit" depicted in the diagram 8 os the Cosmo)."

alex,

You've made a keen observation regarding the Great Ape evolution.

Before humanity was given the Gift of Mind, man had only three vehicles: physical body, etheric body and an astral body. Millions of years ago, a group of beings were given the germ of Mind. These were hominids, not far removed from the animal kingdom themselves. Some of these entities possessed only a "spark" of Mind, which burnt low. Due to a lack of discernment and an over-powering sex-drive, some of these entities copulated with certain lower animal species, resulting in the hybrid creatures we now call the Great Apes.

In esoteric circles, this event is referred to as "The Sin of The Mindless".

From The Secret Doctrine:

"31. THE ANIMALS SEPARATED THE FIRST. THEY BEGAN TO BREED. THE TWO-FOLD MAN SEPARATED ALSO. HE SAID: "LET US AS THEY; LET US UNITE AND MAKE CREATURES." THEY DID.

32. AND THOSE WHICH HAD NO SPARK TOOK HUGE SHE-ANIMALS UNTO THEM. THEY BEGAT UPON THEM DUMB RACES. DUMB THEY WERE THEMSELVES. BUT THEIR TONGUES UNTIED. THE TONGUES OF THEIR PROGENY REMAINED STILL. MONSTERS THEY BRED. A RACE OF CROOKED RED-HAIR-COVERED MONSTERS GOING ON ALL FOURS. A DUMB RACE TO KEEP THE SHAME UNTOLD".

"Two-fold" man refers to man in mankind in its hermaphroditic state.

Unfortunately, due to the twin laws of Attraction and Cause and Effect, the microcosms who particpated in these acts were doomed to incarnate repeatedly in the species that they had unwittingly created.

It has been determined that the Anthropoid Kingdom will move up one rung when Mankind takes its next step upwards. Thus, the Great Apes of today will become the lower human-being of Tomorrow.

This is why we can see a glimmer of intelligence in the eyes of the Great Apes and perhaps a hint of sadness, as well. There is a level of humanity in these creatures, who are indeed our younger brothers. Fortunately, their long exile is nearly at an end.

I believe Heindel discusses this somewhere in the Cosmo. Blavatsky also discussed it in her late 19th century work, The Secret Doctrine.

What's striking about this revelation is that it completely controverts "modern science" by revealing the following:

Man did not descend from the ape; it is the ape who descended from man.

alex,

re: "The lowest level of the 6th cosmic region lies "one step" above the "world of divine spirit" depicted in the diagram 8 os the Cosmo)."

Indeed, the Sixth Cosmic Domain is "the Divine Kingdom" from which we are estranged and to which we are seeking to return. The World of Virgin Spirits (which corresponds to the Adi Plane in Hindu cosmology) simultaneously represents the highest realm of the Seventh Cosmic Domain (the cosmic Physical Plane) and the lowest region of the Sixth Cosmic Domain (the cosmic Astral Plane).

Through this region, the Divine Kingdom has established a beach-head in the Cosmic Physical Realm. Thus, although the Sixth Cosmic Domain is a separate nature-order from the Seventh, the World of Virgin Spirits serves as a "borderland" that enables microcosms who have obtained a certain high level of vibration to be "taken up" as it were, from the Seventh Cosmic domain to the Sixth, aptly named "the Divine Kingdom" by JVR and the young Gnosis.

Heindel's work teaches that Man will make this Journey gradually, through a slow process of evolution gained by experience derived from countless earthly incarnations (epigenesis). Van Rijckenborgh's work endeavors to show humanity that this same Journey (Liberation) can be accomplished in ONE SHORT LIFE, albeit with supreme effort.

This is especially true now, during the end of a Major World-Cycle. ALL humans are being presented with a special opportunity for Liberation that was once reserved for the few. It is the difference between taking the "local" or "express" trains.

The foregoing showcases the major difference in approach between Max Heindel and Jan van Rijckenborgh.
